During a recent conversation with Vytal Options, Belushi’s Farm founder and owner, actor and comedian Jim Belushi, gave us the inside scoop on how strains are chosen and more insight into some of his favorite selections.
Belushi’s Farm: Helping people find healing with quality medicine
Jim shared that his goal is to help more people access quality medical marijuana. Sharing a story of a veteran with PTSD he met at a dispensary, Jim illustrated the importance of the impact of medical marijuana and the mission that keeps the farm going.
“I got into this business to change people’s lives,” Belushi said.
Jim said the veteran he met, an Iraq War veteran who was a medic in the war, was diagnosed with triple PTSD after he was discharged from service. He was given Oxycontin, a drug that he said further isolated him from his family.
“He discovered the strain Black Diamond OG, which allowed him to be a family man again and allowed him to sleep again,” Jim said. “He teared up, he hugged me, and called me a steward [of the plant]. That was the pinnacle for me. These stories are why I am in this business.”
The memory of Jim’s brother, comedian John Belushi, remains close. John died of a drug overdose in 1982. Jim said that he believes access to medical marijuana could have helped his brother.
“I’ve always said that if my brother John was a pothead, he’d be alive today,” Jim said. “I want to pass on help. I want to pass on healing and help prevent other people from perishing from [conditions like Opioid Use Disorder]. This is why I’m in Pennsylvania, this is why I do what I do. Because it can change people’s lives.”

Blue Dream
One of the standout strains Belushi’s Farm is bringing to the keystone state is Blue Dream, a sativa-dominant hybrid and a go-to for patients. Jim is particularly enthusiastic about the strain, citing its exceptional quality and crediting the origins of this specific Blue Dream to Ryan Calamia and Eva Erickson from Haze Valley Nursery.
Jim said the strain is popular among patients for its ability to offer a balanced experience, combining uplifting and calming effects.
“The lineage is Blueberry and Super Silver Haze, so it’s a nice blend, but it’s sativa dominant, which I like because I can continue to talk and work while I’m receiving my medicine. It doesn’t put me on the couch,” Jim shared.
Garlic Mintz
Garlic Mintz, a standout hybrid known for its unique appearance, flavor, and aroma, is one that Jim is particularly excited to bring to Pennsylvania.
“Garlic Mintz is so beautiful for us to harvest,” Jim shared. “The flavors are earthy, the scent is zesty and floral, it’s got [notes] of pine and apples, with a little sour finish.”
In addition to flavor and aroma, Jim shared that the team prioritizes strains like Garlic Mintz because of their high terpene values, especially when it comes to crafting products like live rosin and temple balls.
“We brought Garliz Mintz to Pennsylvania because of the high terpene values,” he shared. “You want live rosin to have the blend of terpenes and THC. You want a full entourage effect feeling.”
Jim highlighted the popularity of the strain across Belushi’s Farm harvests in multiple states. “I’m in 17 states now, and this is one of the strains that people are just going crazy about,” he said.
Pure Michigan
Pure Michigan is an indica hybrid strain made from a cross between Oreoz and Mendo Breath. Jim calls this strain, which can have elevated levels of THC, a “good choice for experienced medical marijuana patients.”
The strain is also high in limonene, which may have an effect on mental clarity.
“Although the indica values [of Pure Michigan] will work in the body, the limonene will keep you a little bit more aware,” he said. “I think people need medical marijuana that allows them to function in the world, and that may make Pure Michigan a great option.”
Temple balls: A premium hash experience
