You must be at least 18 years of age to get a medical marijuana card in PA. Patients under the age of 18 need a caregiver who is 21 or older.

This depends on the schedule and process of the doctor you work with. It generally takes between five days and two weeks to receive a Pennsylvania medical marijuana card in the mail after completing the registration and being certified by an approved doctor.

In the state of Pennsylvania, a medical marijuana card is valid for one year from the date it was issued.

You can renew your patient certification with any registered physician; you are not required to see the same doctor who issued your original certification. After your new certification is completed, log into your PA DOH account to ensure that your annual payment is up to date and a new medical marijuana card will be printed and mailed to the address listed in your patient portal under ‘profile settings.’ You can pay the annual fee before or after your visit.

Learn more about renewals on the DOH website.

A medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania is $50 annually, plus the cost of your doctor visit. Individuals on assistance programs, such as WIC, Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, SNAP, and CHIP, may qualify for a fee waiver.

If you’re not already seeing a state-approved medical marijuana doctor, the initial visit could cost up to $200. Fees are due upon application and must be paid annually for renewal.

A Pennsylvania medical marijuana card typically features the patient’s name, photo, and registration details.

Some states participate in reciprocity programs, which means that you can buy medical marijuana outside of the commonwealth as long as you have a valid and unexpired card. How much you can buy, as well as for how long you can use your out-of-state card, varies from state to state.

States that accept Pennsylvania medical marijuana cards under reciprocity arrangements include:

  • Arizona
  • District of Columbia
  • Hawaii
  • Louisiana
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • Puerto Rico
  • Rhode Island
